A lifelong love of storytelling
Who knew that my childhood love of radio and fascination with the DJs on WPLJ and WBAB would eventually lead me to where I am today? Growing up in New York, I thought radio DJs were rock stars. When I managed to call in and actually speak to them, I was completely captivated. They were rock stars! I never imagined that one day I would be on the other side of the microphone.
I later took classes at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, where my interest in broadcasting grew alongside my passion for acting and storytelling.
While working and living in Boston, my father signed me up for a Syracuse alumni luncheon (I had no idea!). There, I met a wonderful actress who sensed I was ready for a career pivot. She encouraged me to call her voice acting teacher that day—and then call her back to let her know I had. I did both. That teacher was the incredible Wren Ross, with whom I studied for years. I later continued my training in voice-over, on-camera performance, animation, commercials, and improv in Boston and Los Angeles, including at The Groundlings and UCB.
My approach to interviewing was also shaped by my doctoral studies at Boston University. A course in qualitative research taught me the value of asking open-ended questions, listening closely, and allowing people’s experiences to shape the conversation.
Today, I host and produce Get the Funk Out on KUCI 88.9 FM at UC Irvine, where I have meaningful conversations with artists, authors, advocates, experts, and changemakers. I also work in voice-over and write books and scripts.
For me, the goal is never simply to conduct an interview. I want to create a meaningful conversation—one that is engaging, authentic, and inspiring. There is nothing better than being conversational and organic, because that is where true human connection lies.

Janeane studied voice acting in Boston and Los Angeles, and trained at The Groundlings and UCB, where she deepened her love of character work and storytelling.
